The giant flag pole, flying the U.S. flag, is planted where a previous Christian Cross stood until 1997. From the 1930s until 1964 private citizens erected numerous large wooden crosses on the Butte, near the present flag pole, replacing them as they rotted away from our wet climate. The old steel mounting brackets are still visible. In 1964 a 51′ tall, concrete, Cross replaced the wooden crosses, and stood until legal action caused its removal to Eugene Bible College, on Bailey Hill Road *.
